Behavioral Support Services
Behavioral Support Services (BSS) are an array of services to assist those who, without sufficient support, are having trouble at home or in the community because of behavioral, social, or emotional challenges. These services help understand a person’s challenging behavior and develop a Behavior Plan to enhance their independence and integration in their community while providing education to a person’s supporters to help meet their needs.
About Our Program
Behavioral Support Services includes:
- Behavioral Assessment – identifies a person’s challenging behaviors by collecting and reviewing relevant data and discussing the information with the person’s support team.
- Development of a Behavioral Plan – a plan written to guide a person’s support team on how to use proactive and adaptive strategies to aid in a Person’s day-to-day life.
- Behavioral Consultation – services that oversee, monitor, and modify the Behavior Plan; and Brief Support Implementation Services.
- Brief Support Implementation Services (BSIS); Brief Support Implementation Services – a service to provide direct assistance and modeling to families, agency staff, and caregivers so they can independently implement the Behavior Plan.

Who might benefit from these services/why would someone seek out this service specifically?
The Behavior Support Services program aims to assist those who are having trouble at home or in the community because of behavioral, social, or emotional issues. The Behavior Support Service team will meet people where they are at, utilizing and enhancing the support they already receive.
How are services planned and enacted?
Once services begin, a Person will work with one of Compass’s Behavior Consultants to complete a behavior assessment. The Behavior Consultant will meet with the person and their team to gather information about the Person and their challenges to gain an insightful understanding of a person’s behaviors and the factors that can impact them. The Behavior Consultant will then work with the Person’s primary support network to develop a comprehensive behavior support plan. Once the Behavior Plan is finalized, the Behavior Consultant will train team members on the plan to ensure a clear understanding of the implementation strategies. A Compass Behavior Technician will be assigned to follow up on the Behavior Plan and provide BSIS. The Behavior Plan is required to be renewed annually.
Who are the people who provide the services?
Behavior Support Services are provided by a Behavior Consultant and a Behavior Technician, and are coordinated by the Behavior Support Services Coordinator. Behavior Consultants complete behavior assessments, develop behavior plans, and provide consultation on existing behavioral needs. All Behavior Consultants must have a BCBA, LCPC, or LCSW-C License or be under the supervision of a licensed professional. Behavior Technicians provide Brief Support Implementation Services after they have been specifically trained by a Behavior Consultant in implementing and supporting behavior plans in addition to completing the Registered Behavior Technician training.
Are Compass BSS services provided stand-alone?
No. Not at this time. In order to receive Compass BSS, the Person has to receive other Compass Services in conjunction with BSS.
What role do families and other supporters have in these services?
We believe that the most effective way to understand a Person’s behavior and create a lasting positive impact on their life is by partnering with their families and other support networks. This includes immediate family members, friends, staff, and other significant individuals in the Person’s life. Those closest to the Person hold valuable insights into their behaviors and will play a crucial role in implementing the behavior support plan. This responsibility is not taken lightly. Compass Behavior Support Services are committed to equipping the Person’s supporters for success in carrying out the behavior support plan. For the best possible outcomes, it’s essential that the person, their supporters, and our BSS team collaborate closely to deliver effective services.
