Meet House Manager Queen
In an interview, Compass House Manager Queen Dioni shares with us her history at Compass and what qualities, approaches, and opportunities can help a person enter the field and grow their career.
Queen joined Compass as a DSP I in a Community Living Group Home, working a variety of shifts. She acknowledges that each shift had unique responsibilities, and their own pros and cons. Given her self-starter personality, in her role Queen found many rewarding opportunities to improve the experience of the people she supported, and her efforts helped to keep the house organized and in healthy communication with each other. She also received DSP II training, which gave her new skills, along with a pay increase. In recognition of her work, Queen became a house manager in 2021. In this role, she has been able to continue to use the skills she used as a DSP, while gaining leadership skills as she manages staff, oversees household activities, and ensures the wellness of those who live in the house, among other responsibilities.
One key insight Queen shares is the importance of understanding and respecting the diverse needs of the people around you. Queen stresses how important it is to focus on developing interpersonal effectiveness, to be aware of policies and procedures of the organization, and to always stress consistency and standards with her team.
Reflecting on the challenges of the job, Queen acknowledges the learning curve, particularly during her initial days as a DSP staff member. However, her proactive approach to learning, seeking guidance from colleagues, and dedicating time to reading and understanding policies helped her navigate these challenges effectively.
When asked for advice for those considering a career in disability services or similar fields, Queen emphasizes the importance of passion, empathy, and a genuine desire to make a difference. She advises people to make sure their occupational goals are aligned with their personal values, emphasizing that success in human services comes from a place of genuinecare and commitment.
