Breaking News:

The Search Committee has begun their work to identify a new Executive Director for Compass, Inc.  Current ED, Ande Kolp has accepted a position as the Executive Director for The Arc Maryland, and will be transitioning to that position on July 1, 2017.  Until such time as a new ED is secured, Ms. Joan Whitney will serve as the Acting Executive Director of the organization.

Joan has been the Director of Human Resources at Compass since 2009.  She has over 35 years of experience working for organizations that support individuals with Intellectual and Developmental disabilities.  Starting out early in her career as a Direct Support Professional she has also held positions in case management, program management and administration.

Prior to her employment with Compass, Joan worked for United Cerebral Palsy of Washington DC (UCP) for 17 years. Her many roles there included serving as an Activities Coordinator, Director of Day Services and Director of Human Services.  Her additional career experience includes working at Georgetown University Child Development Center on the Forest Haven project.  There she served as a Case Manager and Administrator and assisted with outplacement and transition of adults with developmental disabilities from institutional to community living.

Joan’s demonstrated commitment to the rights and inclusion of all people, combined with her commitment to our organization and her vast administrative experience and expertise will suit her well as she assumes the role of Interim Executive Director for Compass, Inc.

Executive Director Position Summary

Compass, Inc. seeks an Executive Director to lead the organization in its effort to support individuals to realize their dreams and live valued lives in their communities.  This position requires an energetic, entrepreneurial, nimble, and passionate professional committed to creating great opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) who concurrently experience emotional/behavioral challenges.  Ideal candidates will have demonstrated success in developing and sustaining inclusive programs, leading an inspired and resourceful staff, implementing sound business and fiscal operations, and adhering to high ethical standards.

For over 21 years, Compass Inc. has been helping people find their direction in life. The organization operates programs and services in Montgomery, Prince George’s, Howard and Charles Counties. It currently supports 135 people in its community living program and 51 people in its employment, educational, recreational, and expressive arts programs. Compass, Inc. takes great pride in opening its services to all people regardless of the complexity and intensity of their support needs. The organization is governed by a six member volunteer board of directors. It employs over 450 individuals and has an annual operating budget of $18 million.

The Executive Director Position

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will:

  • Lead the organization by developing bold and exciting strategic initiatives that advance authentic inclusion for people with I/DD in all aspects of community life;
  • Communicate the organization’s mission and vision to a wide variety of audiences in a way that engages others in the organization’s work;
  • Provide inspiring leadership and direction for the organization’s staff that promotes sound management, on-going professional development, concise direction, open communications, and a positive work environment where all staff members learn and thrive;
  • Maintain an effective and open working relationship with the Board of Directors, regularly apprising the Board about internal operations and important external developments, and supporting the Board in its governance and policy making roles;
  • Assure that the organization’s financial operations lead to a healthy financial position that fuels the organization’s mission;
  • Expand the resource development program in a way that leads to effective/efficient fundraising, enhanced corporate partnerships, new funding avenues, and expanded visibility throughout the organization’s service area;
  • Work in partnership with like-minded organizations and develop enduring supportive relationships with key political, business and philanthropic allies.

 Immediate Priorities

In the first 12-18 months in the position, the new Executive Director should focus on these priorities:

  • Use the current one-year Strategic Plan as a short-term guide and prepare the agency to commence in the development of a new long-term multi-year plan;
  • Conduct a thorough review and analysis of the organization and the environment in which it operates. This process will include all major stakeholders including program participants, families, staff, board, funders and external partners.  Use the findings of this process to plan and strengthen the organization’s internal systems, operations and practices;
  • Support the Board of Directors in its efforts to strengthen its role in the governance of the organization. Particular emphasis will be on strategic recruiting, expanding the size of the Board, and redesigning committee structure and operations;
  • Conduct a study to investigate potential new program initiatives and new funding sources. Review current programs to determine feasibility for expansion;
  • Build the organization’s resource development capacity;
  • Develop a new family outreach and communication program to assure the organization responds to feedback and concerns in ways that lead to constructive dialogue and resolution;
  • Develop internal competencies that are tailored to meet the funding requirements of the Developmental Disabilities Administration and assure that these efforts are aligned with the self-directed service model.

Desired Skills/Experience/Attributes

  • Dynamic leader with a history of creating new and exciting initiatives that are responsive to the needs and desires of people with I/DD and a clear record of promoting, enhancing, and furthering  agency mission;
  • History of systematically utilizing the principles of inclusion, people first, person centered planning  and choice in all aspects of agency operations;
  • Ability to lead, manage and motivate others toward the attainment of a common goal;
  • Interpersonal skills that promote trust, understanding, compassion, integrity and teamwork;
  • Successful resource development experience with an emphasis on special events, gifts, appeals, corporate partnerships, grant writing, and entrepreneurial initiatives;
  • Track record of developing positive working relationship with funders, corporations, and public officials;
  • Extensive experience in developing and successfully managing a multi-departmental  corporate budget;
  • Record of collaborating with like-minded organizations and persuading public officials to support the needs of people with I/DD;
  • Knowledge and skills related to advocacy at the individual and systems levels:
  • Experience working with a nonprofit or for-profit board of directors to develop engaged and effective governance;
  • Articulate spokesperson with influential communication and public-speaking skills.

 Required Experience and Attributes

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive senior management responsibility preferably in a nonprofit organization or public agency;
  • Proficient in use of current technology and effective electronic communication methods;
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in relevant field preferred.

Compensation will be competitive with similarly sized community based nonprofits and commensurate with experience.  Regular travel throughout the State of Maryland is required.
